TCM for the Heart: New JAMA Study
Compound Helps Patients Suffering Particularly Dangerous Form of Myocardial Infarction
A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) suggests that a severe type of heart attack called ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) could have better outcomes when treated with Traditional Chinese Medicine Tongxinluo alongside standard care guidelines. Tongxinluo, made from extracts of various plants and insects, showed a decrease in major adverse cardiac/cerebrovascular events over 30 days, three months, and one year in STEMI patients. The study, involving nearly 3,800 patients in China, found that although Tongxinluo had more side effects (GI symptoms) compared to a placebo, further research is needed to understand its active ingredients and how it works in treating STEMI.
